Learning About Anxiety Drug Therapy

In everybody's life, there probably comes a time when everything seems aimless and without meaning. However, once those devastating feelings start to take over someone's ability to handle his or her situations and continue to become more and more severe, it will eventually result in causing serious problems for anybody's daily activities. These people, suffering from anxiety, are surely looking for some kind of anxiety drug therapy that will help them to decrease these anxiety symptoms.

Anxiety can be incredibly hard to deal with. an affected person will feel completely stressed and bothered, and yet quite often be too embarrassed to do anything about it. That is where treating anxiety comes into play, and although there are many different options available, the preferred one is the anxiety drug therapy.

One of the main reasons why anxiety drug therapy is quite popular is because it works almost immediately. Although the full effects may not be noticed for up to six weeks, a first change can be experienced within a couple of days. Generally one particular medication or combination of medications can produce significant results. There are basically two types of anxiety pills: MAOIs or monoamine oxidase inhibitors and SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Plus, there are a couple of other medications available such as benzodiazepines and beta blockers.

MAOIs work by blocking the breakdown of serotinin and norepinephrine. This helps to increase the levels of these neurotransmitters, which, in return, will decrease both, depression and anxiety. SSRIs work with your body specifically to increase the levels of serotonin. Serotonin is required to metabolize stress hormones. This basically means that your body needs certain levels of serotonin to get rid of the hormones that are produced by anxiety and stress. Low levels of serotonin have been shown to be present in anxiety and depression sufferers. SSRIs are quite popular, because they have fewer side effects than MAOIs.

However, almost all the anxiety drugs, though extremely effective in their results, may cause some side effects like sexual dysfunction, sleeping problems, increase in weight, increased blood pressure as well as fatigue and nausea.

The effectiveness of any anxiety drug therapy can differ from person to person. Therefore it is important to discuss the various treatment options with a doctor. Sufferers might need to try out different drug therapies before finding one suitable for their specific condition.

Working closely with a doctor and/or therapist and keeping him or them up to date about any progress of your condition, and whether you are experiencing side effects, is important for any successful anxiety drug therapy
