Dealing With Social Anxiety


Every year, quite a few people  are diagnosed with social anxiety disorder. Nowadays you will find various support groups, where these disorder sufferers can meet to help each other in different ways. For someone dealing with anxiety, there is today a number of prescription medications available.

People can begin to suffer from social anxiety when they are only a few months of age. At that point in time it is considered a natural part of the way we mature. People that have social anxiety issues later in life are thought to have suffered from some type of emotional trauma during their adolescence. There are a number of different things that can be a sign of social anxiety.

Social Anxiety Symptoms

Most often social anxiety occurs in a public setting. Maybe you are standing in line at the grocery store or shopping at the mall. You might get a sudden feeling that everyone is watching your every move. Some people might not be bothered by this and may even welcome the attention. For others it can be very upsetting. They might feel their heart starting to race and may even notice that they are suddenly sweating. For people that find themselves in this type of situation it is very possible that they could be suffering from social anxiety.

Another common symptom of social anxiety is muscle tension. People can stiffen up when they are placed in an uncomfortable situation. To go along with this, a person might even notice that their voice cracks or is shaky when they try to hold a conversation. Their mouth might even feel dry and they might find it hard to swallow.

Other people feel nauseous when social anxiety starts to set it. The feeling of nervous butterflies can fill the stomach. This can lead to things like dizziness and some people might notice that the palms of their hands become extremely clammy. As social anxiety can make the heart start to beat faster, a person might even develop flushed cheeks as a result.

Every person suffering from social anxiety might display different symptoms. They might also vary in the extent in which they suffer from these symptoms. Some people might find that they become drenched in sweat generated by the apprehension that they experience. Other people might generally find that they clench up in embarrassing situations where they find themselves uncomfortable. Anyone that feels like they might be suffering from this type of anxiety should think about having a conversation with their doctor about the variety of treatment choices available.
